FAQ’s

The SSSTS course is not overly difficult, but it does require attention and engagement. It is designed to be accessible for site supervisors, even those with limited previous health and safety training. To pass the SSSTS exam, you need to score at least 80%, which generally means answering 24 out of 30 questions correctly. There are also a few critical safety questions that must be answered correctly to pass, regardless of your overall score. Most training providers report pass rates of around 96–98%, so with proper engagement over the two days, the vast majority of candidates succeed.

Although not legally required, most employers expect candidates applying for site supervisor roles to hold a valid SSSTS certificate. The SSSTS course is endorsed by several major industry bodies, including BUILDUK, which is composed of the largest construction companies in the UK and requires all individuals in a supervisory role to demonstrate their competence. So while it isn’t a strict legal requirement, in practice it is widely expected and often mandatory on major contractor sites.

SMSTS is the higher qualification. The SSSTS two-day course is suitable for those responsible for supervising sites or acting as team leaders in construction and civil engineering, while the SMSTS five-day course is aimed at those in managerial roles such as Site Manager or Project Leader. It builds on the foundations of SSSTS and covers broader site management responsibilities. If you have no previous health and safety knowledge, it is generally recommended to complete the SSSTS before progressing to the SMSTS.

It’s less a question of one being “better” and more about which is appropriate for your role and industry. The IOSH Managing Safely course is similar in length and style to the SMSTS but is geared towards general management roles across any industry or sector, whereas the SSSTS is specifically designed for supervisory roles in construction. IOSH is a broader course that doesn’t provide construction-specific safety guidelines in the same way SSSTS does. If you work in construction and need to demonstrate supervisory competence on site, SSSTS is more relevant and widely recognised by UK main contractors. IOSH qualifications are more transferable across industries and valuable for broader career development, but they won’t carry the same weight on a construction site as the CITB-accredited SSSTS.
