It’s less a question of one being “better” and more about which is appropriate for your role and industry. The IOSH Managing Safely course is similar in length and style to the SMSTS but is geared towards general management roles across any industry or sector, whereas the SSSTS is specifically designed for supervisory roles in construction. IOSH is a broader course that doesn’t provide construction-specific safety guidelines in the same way SSSTS does. If you work in construction and need to demonstrate supervisory competence on site, SSSTS is more relevant and widely recognised by UK main contractors. IOSH qualifications are more transferable across industries and valuable for broader career development, but they won’t carry the same weight on a construction site as the CITB-accredited SSSTS.
